Fun Ways of Spending Time under the Rain

Have you ever experience having an agreement with your friends on hanging-out yet suddenly drops of rain fell from the sky without warning. One would probably say, “Kalagut pud neh uie! Spoiler kau ang rain!” Since its already rainy season, does that mean we should feel down and dreary? Is this the time to feel a mood of being nostalgic? No! Your wrong, people! Get used to it and learn to love the falling rain!
There are not that many people that enjoy rainy days, especially teens. As summer weather rolls in and starts to get warmer outside, teens want to hang outside. Sadly, getting up on a rainy day can take the fun of hanging out, and it's a great idea to have some things to do when it rains. Few things were more upsetting than this as a child. Luckily we could still do something on making it easier to bear the load of a bad weather. Here are several suggestions that may come in use the next time your friends are feeling dejected due to the weather conditions. Depending upon what they like, there will most definitely be a few things that should suit them well.

Here are some suggestions on how to enjoy rainy days:

1. Read.  During the normal days we are always too busy, running somewhere, doing something, meeting someone. We arrive home, at the end of the day, and we don’t have the strength for reading a good book, we prefer to lie in front of a screen and relax with some TV shows. A rainy day is the perfect moment for start reading the book that is sitting next to our bed since a while.
What better way to enjoy a fine book than sitting beside the window while it is raining outside? The sound of the rain pitter patter against the window pane is enough to take our reading to a whole new level of enjoyment. And it doesn't even have to be in your house. In school, if you’re doing nothing, go to the library and spend your free time on reading interesting and knowledgeable books or magazines, even newspapers .Try to invite some of your friends to come with you. At least, you won’t only enjoy bonding with them but your minds will surely be filled with new learning at the same time.

2.  Play. Another fun way to kill time is to play board games such as chess, dama, scrabble, monopoly, snake and ladder game, etc. One could also play cards with any of your family member or to anyone. Have some munchies beside you if you may. To make it more fun, give some consequences to those who will lose.
If it’s tedious for you to stay inside your house, get out and play under the rain. Let the tiny drops of water touch your body. Its fine to get wet as long as you would take a bath afterwards.
3.  Watch.  Most teenagers enjoy film showing, but picking the best ones is necessary. Some would prefer comedy or action movies especially boys which fits to their personality, others love cartoon films as well. Yet romantic themes are usually searched for, since it’s easy to find. It's also one nice way of falling in love and reminiscing some moments of you with the one that you adore in the rain.
You could watch movies on cinemas especially when someone’s accompanying you. If you can’t avail to buy ticket on movie theatres, you could still stay at home and watch TV or play movies with your family. Besides, it’s one way of strengthening your relationship with the other members of the family.

4. Listen. For many of us, listening to the sound of music uplifts and rejoices the spirit of a weary person. For others, it’s one unique way of connecting not only to others but to God.
According to Manasi Chaudhari, Director, MassTech Controls Pvt Ltd in Mumbai Area, India in one of her articles on lifestyle, music has the ability to reduce pain through release of endorphins which act as natural pain killers. According to a study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, listening to music daily can reduce chronic pain by up to 21 percent. The study also found that listening to music made people feel more in control of their pain, reduced depression or stress.
Aside from that, a new Italian study found that people with mild hypertension who listened to classical music for just 30 minutes a day for one month had significant reductions in their blood pressure. Good music helps to calm down the cells and tissues that make up the lungs thereby bringing down the patient's breathing and heart rate to normal.
Moreover, with its strong beat, it can stimulate brainwaves to resonate in sync with the beat, with faster beats bringing sharper concentration and more alert thinking.
Make it happen. Just turn on your radio or listen to some of the tones in your cell phone. By a second, your rainy day won’t be too drudging anymore since listening to all sorts of  songs, whether ballad, reggae, RNB, pop, jazz, or acoustic, is one relaxing exercise to do.
If music isn’t your type, open the window, lie down and let the sound of falling rain in the roof and window pane soothe you. Hear nature’s lovely voice--the chirping of the birds and the swaying of the leaves of the trees as it synchronizes the movement of the air.

5. Write. During rainy seasons everyone are barked inside their houses, so, instead of wasting your time by just watching at your clock and waiting for it to reach mealtime, think of any innovative things that you can do.
Some, maybe most of us are not that interested on writing or creating ingenious pieces of poems, short stories, or essays. Writing of any sort is hard, but rewarding work – you’ll gain a huge amount of satisfaction from a finished piece. Being creative can also be difficult and challenging at times, but immensely fun.
But creative writing is known to be a great stress buster. You can pen down your feelings and emotions upon something or to someone, could be an inspiration or enemy. Jut down everything that you observe in your surroundings. This is also a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the regular life.
That is one advantage of writing. It doesn’t need to be poetically written. For as long as the fact remains that you made it yourself with all affection and focus, your composition would be fulfilling no matter how simple it may be.
Here’s another one: think about reverse writing. This is when you write out a sentence backwards. When you're done, hold it up to a mirror and see how you did. I think you do this if you’re really bored and nothing to do.

6. Eat. In everything we do at home or in school it’s always good to have something to chew. Meals and snacks, if possible, should not be missed. Eating has been part of our daily routine. Nothing can restrain or cease people from doing so, even the rain. The coldness of the season makes us starve that’s why we eat most likely during rainy days.
In school, students in the cafeterias are overflowing, squandering around, looking for some good food that could satisfy their hunger. For those who don't have money to spare, having a piece of candy in their mouth is enough.
At home, when you’re doing nothing and you suddenly feel hunger yet you can’t get out of your house due to the hard rain, better if you make use of what you have. Look for scrap ingredients in your kitchen; you could do experiments in cooking. Try to bake cakes and cookies or even a pizza out of sandwich, tomato, ketchup and grinded meat. Make a pancake or simply a hot cake made from flour, egg, and pineapple juice. Or a hot porridge like champorado, dinuldog, or lugaw that complements the cold weather.
See? There are a lot of options to choose from. It’s up to you, which would satisfy you the most. Getting under a blanket while eating and watching the rain would be great.

7. Clean. When the weather gets awful, we usually stay at home. Instead of locking-up yourself in boredom, why not use your time in thinking some ways of making rainy days relevant like cleaning-up. Try to observe if your house still looks presentable for guests to visit. If not, then change the arrangement of the chairs, tables and cabinets. Wipe the dusts and cobwebs in your window, furniture, figurines and other things in the house. Sweep the floor or put some floor wax in all corners of the house for it to look shipshape.
It would be better if your family is with you. Doing the household chores may be tiring, yet rewarding as soon as you’re through with it, seeing the inside of your house with a new fresh look.
12. Sleep. Of course, for many the rain is the ideal time to go to sleep. When it’s cold, we really have to lie down in our beds, crawl under the blanket and have some shut-eye. Typically, we easily get tired and bored in a whole day of doing nothing.

Rainy days are indeed a time for rest and relaxation since sleeping is one way of stocking up your body’s energy and reserving it for the next following days.
God created water to be the main life-giving element on this planet. We are mostly made of water, and without it, all life on earth would perish. Many people enjoy rain for different reasons, and also the primordial part of us knows that water is the reason why life, as we know it, exists on earth.

Rainy season should not be considered as one pesky weather. Instead, make it more pleasurable and interesting- a time to spare with family and friends; also a time to repose from work and studies. Probably you will never get this opportunity again, in the next busy days. There is no end for all of the choices to pick from. They are a great way for everyone to have a good time in one cold rainy period.

Travel of A Lifetime

My younger brother, John Steven just had his 8th birthday last October 9. Basically this is one celebration wherein members of the family are expected to be all present. Since it happens once a year, we make the most out of it. However, a typical birthday party which we used to have didn’t work out. Instead, an unexpected happening took place.

1st Flight.
My father who was given an offer to work in Manila for three weeks, supposed to be on his way back in Dumaguete by October 8 yet it was being moved on the 9th due to the extreme typhoon.
Unfortunately, Papa wasn’t able to make it to his flight on the 9th. The plane had flown up when he arrived at the airport, an hour earlier than the time of departure scheduled on his plane ticket. There he realized that the flight scheduling in Manila is a lot different compared to what’s in Dumaguete. Here, airplanes fly exactly on the appointed time.
As to when Papa called, my mother and Steven wept. It squeezes Mama’s heart to hear him hardly crying on the phone—apologizing for not coming home and explicating what had just happened.
At that time I wasn’t home for dinner because ‘twas our Physical Education Night. I spent the rest of the night at TN office together with my friend Shen Mae. We stayed there since her father didn’t come to fetch us. I just knew the bad news as soon as I reached home.
The day which supposed to be packed with nimble and fun turned out dejected and gloomy. Since Papa was so down-poured, his boss threw a children’s party (bought food, drinks, cake, and even invited little kids) to alleviate his sorrow of missing us, his family. They sang “Happy Birthday” on phone so that Steven won’t be sad anymore.
Though that special day was all wrecked up, father was still grateful of having such great boss, so generous and kind—someone who understood and sympathized him on one of his darkest hours. For the time being, they also went to church and shop through malls and Divisoria to buy us ‘Pasalubong.’
                                                                   2nd Flight.
October 11 came. He left Cavite (where my father stayed along with his bosses) as early as he could. Again for the second time around, he was barred by the security and was told that the airplane was ready for takeoff.  Determined and eager of going home, he persistently asked approval on catching it and so, the guard allowed him. He waved his bosses goodbye and hurriedly proceed to where the plane was located.

Actually, on his way, he got a chance to see up close some PALEA( Philippine Airlines Employees Association ) staffs having their rally due to some certain issues.

The area was so wide he can’t even see a single plane. They departed at about 6:02 in the morning and   had arrived around 8:00.
The three of us, Mama, Steven and I, jumped into rejoice as he got out from the arrival station. We hugged him so tight as if he was gone for years. Can you blame us? We aren’t accustomed of being separated for just a couple of days. From then on, Papa realized that it’s not easy working and living distant away from your loved ones.
Despite the predicaments he had gone through in coming back, everything was still worth it. It was not only the job and salary that he’s up to; it’s the urging of his heart and mind to grasp the opportunity of traveling. It’s a dream come true for Papa to ride on an airplane, travel in a far away land and to visit some of his relatives in Manila, especially Lola Titang whom he haven’t seen for several years.
Among the things he treasured the most, one of which would probably be his journey to Manila. A remarkable experience indeed --- something that is worth remembering.
